The Norwood Italian Lodge #1235, a local chapter of the Sons of Italy, recently held its Annual Scholarship Awards
Dinner on June 7, 2016, at CONRAD’S Restaurant in Walpole. Lodge President, Steve Eosco, greeted members and guests.
Scholarship Chairwoman, Toni Eosco, also welcomed those in attendance. In particular, she recognized lodge members,
Barbara Campagna and Winnie Carfagno, for their volunteer work on the scholarship committee. The scholarship
award presentations took place immediately following a delicious buffet dinner.
Through the fundraising efforts of its lodge members, two scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each were awarded
to 4-year college-bound students. Scholarship committee member, Barbara Campagna, made the first award presentation
to Laura Ailinger, a graduate of Norwood High School. Laura is the daughter of Amy & Joseph Ailinger as well as the
granddaughter of lodge members, Frances and Joseph Ailinger of Norwood.
Laura will pursue her degree at Roger Williams University in Rhode Island. Scholarship committee member,
Winnie Carfagno, made the second award presentation to Ryan McDonough, also a graduate of Norwood High.
Ryan is the son of Lisa and Thomas McDonough as well as the grandson of lodge member, Virginia Downing, and her
husband, James of Norwood. Ryan will pursue his degree at Fairfield University in Connecticut.
Lodge members congratulated Laura and Ryan and wished them good luck with all future plans.
Following the awards, guest speaker, Debbi Sancricca, a frequent traveler to Italy and fluent in the Italian
language, captured the attention of the audience with a beautiful talk and slide show of Italy. Ms. Sancricca
spoke of the importance of knowing about your own family Italian heritage, and of the value of organizations,
such as the Norwood Italian Lodge, that help to promote and preserve the Italian culture. In particular,
she expressed best wishes to the scholarship winners and encouraged them to cherish who ‘they are’ and to
value their Italian ancestors that came before them who helped pave the way for generations to come.
